TWC - Taranaki Wave Classic 2017

Sat 21 Oct 2017 - Mon 23 Oct 2017
Taranaki

1983 was the year that the Taranaki Wave Classic was born, in it’s first guise as the Sirocco Expression Session. Biggie Smithers, along with his board brand Sirocco, ran the first wave sailing contest in Taranaki. It was designed to maximise time on the water for all competitors – this format proved an instant success with 60-70 sailors participating.

Taranaki Wave Classic 2016 report

Taranaki Wave Classic 2016 went off! Hosted by Carbon Art Windsurf Boards, the 2016 event delivered fantastic conditions for both official competition and the ‘unofficial’ practice day on Friday. Pungarehu – the spiritual home of New Zealand wavesailing – came to the party early on the Friday with the traditional south-easterly arriving by late morning. Early bird locals were there and on it well before lunchtime, as well as the visitors appearing from all around the country; eager to get some practice in.

With 5/6 people in each heat, light wind on the inside and long lulls between sets, getting two decent waves in 15 minutes was the challenge.
