Windsurfing Slalom Racing returns to Eastbourne.

The Wellington Windsurfing Association (WWA) staged its final summer event in Eastbourne recently when riders revelled and raced in winds ranging from 28 to 38 knots. Slalom racing is the ‘Formula 1’ of windsurfing, with equipment and courses set to achieve maximum speeds, usually in a down wind zig-zag course and speeds up to 70 km per hour.

Windsurfing Event safety check-out / check-in board

At the recent Eastbourne Windsurfing Fun Slalom event we trialled a check-out / check-in board system for managing safety. I first encountered this at the National Slalom event in Dunedin and it worked well, so I decided to try it here. It worked well so here's the details on how to make and use your own (total cost $6)

WWA Eastbourne Fun Slalom

Sunday 28th. This will be a fun slalom event at Eastbourne (opposite the ESSC/Shortt Rec.) open to all comers (stretch of water between the shore and Ward Island).
Doesn't matter what you sail, come along. Slalom is a great way to improve your gybes.
Course will probably be figure of 8 with beach starts (may be able to organise boat starts).
Registration from 11am, first race at 12, BBQ after. NOR and more details to follow soon.
Open to all WNZ and WWA members, join on the day. $5 to cover costs.

National Windsurfing Slalom Series another success story

The National Slalom competition in Dunedin last week was an unqualified success, with around 50 competitors, close racing and good media coverage including TV ensuring high visibility. Well done to the organisers and all the competitors for making it so great! Coverage on TV3 was unprecedented for windsurfing over recent years, and the local press gave good coverage:

North Island Cup Slalom Champs 2013

The AWA together with the Manly Yacht Club and Windsurfing New Zealand are pleased to bring you the North Island Cup for Slalom.

This will be a one-event competition held on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February 2013 at Manly Beach Whangaparaoa Auckland.

This event will be held together with the RXS and Techno Nationals and Formula racing, also competing on Friday 15 February.

South Island Cup round 2

This weekend (1st & 2nd December) is the 2nd Round of the South Island Cup.
Skippers meeting is at 11am at the DWA Clubrooms.
Entry is $20 per competitor and this pays for the boat hire from Ravensbourne YC and BBQ
Forecast at this stage is for Nor Easters on the Saturday.
We have at least 3 people from out of town coming, so lets all get out there and show them how it's done!

South Island Cup Round 1 report from Paul Vliestra

S.I. Cup Round 1 in Chch, Saturday 24th, 5 races for the Open Men and 5 races for the Open Women and Juniors together. Racing on the estuary, was fun with Chris Dimock and Terry Beentjies having some tight racing, My mast broke just before the 1st race so had to use my 6.3m instead of my 7.0m but was great fun and tiring after 5 races of pumping like crazy. Annie Crombie used a 7.2m sail all day and Tom McGregor a 7.8m everyone else was on 7.0's or less.

Another exciting weekend of racing is coming up in Auckland on the 4th (This Sunday)!! Lets hope the wind plays its part! We are looking at running it at Farm Cove so stay tuned! I have attached an image of the great event we last had there.
