From 19.26 April 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères returns to the French Riviera, bringing together the world's top Olympic and Paralympic class competitors.
ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères is the final regatta included in the 2013-2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup, the sixth edition of the annual series for Olympic sailing.
Hyères and the palm trees, symbol of the city, is appreciated by competitors and their support, for the climate, the easy access with the international airport at walking distance form the port, and for facilities as easy accommodation, at reasonable price compared with other cities of Riviera Coast.
The racing areas offers a wide range of wind conditions, with smooth sea breeze, sometimes Mistral, strong northerly with flat water, or easterly wind bringing big waves and rough sea. These changing conditions make the sport difficult but cannot be better for preparation of the teams.
Pierre le Coq and Charline Picon have sailed to victory at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca, in Spain
Pierre Le Coq fended off a final assault from race winner Byron Kokkalanis. The Greek was devastatingly quick on the final downwind as he used every last ounce of strength he had left. But the French secured first place.
"The medal race was really close and we were fighting a lot with all the other guys. The positions were close right up until the last downwind so it was a nice fight. I didn't have a very good start but I used my speed and came back up so I kept my first place," says Le Coq.
Bronze went the way of Louis Giard, who finished the medal race in third.
In the Women's RS:X division, Charline Picon came into the medal race with an unassailable 42 point lead. With gold wrapped up the pressure was off the French sailor, and she enjoyed the last race of the regatta, coming in third.
"I'm very happy with the whole competition because I was very consistent. My worst race was ninth. We had all conditions here with planing, no wind and pumping, and I'm happy with my work in the winter," adds Picon.
The fight for the remaining podium spots was on with any one of Lilian De Geus, Blanca Manchon, Bryony Shaw and Flavia Tartaglini, in with a shout of the medals.
De Geus was the leading sailor of the four going into the Medal Race and managed to hold on to second overall. Manchon narrowly finished behind De Geus with bronze going her way.
